A hernia is an abnormal defect or opening which allows a protrusion or bulge. They can occur in
many different places in the body. The location of a hernia denotes its name. Some of the most common
types are inguinal or groin hernias, ventral or abdominal wall hernias, umbilical or belly button hernias, and
hiatal hernias.
Usually, once present, a hernia enlarges and should be surgically repaired to
avoid potential problems.
